I just got off the phone with Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren, who found himself at the center of the most controversial play of Week 4 in the Big Ten.

Michigan led Indiana 36-33 as the Hoosiers started a drive from their own 26-yard line with 2:33 left in Saturday's game. Quarterback Ben Chappell threw a short pass to Damarlo Belcher, but Warren was right there to get his hands on the ball. At full speed, it appeared as though both Belcher and Warren caught the ball, resulting in a simultaneous possession that awards the catch to the offensive player. But officials gave Warren the interception, and a replay review confirmed the call on the field.

It was a very close call, though this evidence favors Michigan and the officials.

Here's Warren's take on what happened:

"I tried to bait the quarterback and back up a little bit, but I knew I was going to time the route," Warren told me. "I just dove and I caught the ball first. The receiver's arms got tangled within my arms to try to snatch the ball away from me on the way to the ground. Once he was on the ground, I wrestled his arms away from my arms and tried to come up with the ball and show the ref that I had the interception."

So Warren definitely had the ball first?

"Yes, definitely," he said. "I caught the ball first."

Despite his belief, Warren knew what the play looked like in real time and prepared for Belcher to be awarded the reception.

"How it looked, it looked like it could have been a simultaneous catch," he said. "But I had the ball first. The ref that made the call was the inside ref, the one behind the linebackers, so he had the first insight and he could see that I had possession of the ball and the receiver's arms were within my arms.

"They made a great call, and I was just trying to make a play for the team."
