Iowa will be indulging in some uniform nostalgia this year, wearing throwback outfits for the season opener against Iowa State.

The Hawkeyes will don uniforms patterned after the 1921-22 teams in the Cy-Hawk Trophy game on Sept. 8 at Kinnick Stadium.

This will be Iowa's third game in throwback uniforms. The Hawkeyes wore uniforms modeled after the 1958 squad when they defeated Ball State 45-0 on Sept. 25, 2010, and honored the 1939 Ironmen during the 39-7 win against Kent State on Sept. 4, 2004.

Iowa went 7-0 in both 1921 and 1922 under coach Howard Jones, and won all five Big Ten Conference games each season. The two undefeated seasons were part of an overall 20-game winning streak that included the final three games of 1920 until the fourth game of the 1923 season.

The uniforms will feature an old gold helmet with gray facemasks. The jerseys will be black with gold semicircles under the arms, white numbers and no player names. The pants will also be gold, and the shoes and socks will be black. An image of the uniform tops can be found here.

The question remains whether Iowa will join the craze of wearing futuristic looking uniforms someday.
