In news that's not all that surprising but still disappointing, Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that quarterbacks Jon Budmayr and Bart Houston won't play for the Badgers in 2012. Neither was expected to contribute this season because of injuries.

Budmayr was named the starter last spring before NC State transfer Russell Wilson arrived in the summer. Budmayr then was sidelined during preseason camp with a nerve issue in his throwing arm, and he missed the entire season. He did not practice this spring while still recovering from the problem.

Bielema said Budmayr's arm is doing better, but now he needs hip surgery. A junior, Budmayr has already redshirted once, and you have to wonder if he'll ever be healthy enough to make an impact with the Badgers.

Houston is a highly-rated incoming freshman who had shoulder surgery during the offseason. He was not going to be able to throw at the start of training camp and was expected to redshirt all along.

The news doesn't have a big effect on Wisconsin's 2012 hopes, since Maryland transfer Danny O'Brien is likely to take the starting job, and he has two years of eligibility. Joel Stave ascended to the No. 1 spot at quarterback ahead of Joe Brennan this spring and will challenge O'Brien for the job. Beyond those three, there isn't much depth at quarterback should injuries at the position mount.
