According to a Michigan audit first obtained by The Detroit News, the football team didn't file monthly logs that recorded how much time players spent practicing or working out during the 2008 season.
The team did file its logs after the audit was conducted at the conclusion of last season.
Given the NCAA's ongoing investigation into allegations of time-limit violations by Michigan's football program, this information doesn't bode well for the team. Head coach Rich Rodriguez has said all along that the program complied with NCAA rules and didn't exceed time limits.
But without concrete proof, this could turn into a he said-he said with the NCAA.
To be clear, the audit didn't say violations were committed, just that it could not properly audit the football program's reports for countable athletically related activities (CARA) because they weren't available.
The audit's findings will be submitted to Michigan's Board of Regents this month.
Some key points from The Detroit News' story:
The NCAA sent Michigan a notice of inquiry last month, which states that an initial review shows violations might have occurred. The investigation likely will conclude by the end of December.
Here's the university's statement about the audit.

Some key points from The Detroit News' story:
The audit looked at six other sports at the university, including men's basketball and men's ice hockey, and raised no similar questions.
Without the logs, it could not audit the football program's CARA requirements. The audit did note this was an "area of concern" and sent a memo to the athletic department to correct it. According to the university, the department did "correct" the problem.
