The face of Wisconsin football isn't going anywhere.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, who coached the Badgers from 1990-2005, has had his contract extended through 2018, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal. The newspaper reports Alvarez held his annual performance review with outgoing chancellor David Ward last month, and received a new five-year contract and a raise.

From the State Journal:
Alvarez's contract calls for a raise of $25,000, which will put his compensation package for 2013-14 at $1.050 million and keep him among the highest-paid college athletic directors in the nation. Of that salary, $500,000 comes from UW Athletics and the rest from gift funds at the UW Foundation.

Alvarez's new salary ranks him third among Big Ten athletic directors and in the top 10 nationally.

Alvarez, 66, will be 71 when the current agreement expires. He became Wisconsin's athletic director in April 2004, serving as both football coach and AD for two years before moving solely into the AD role.

A College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Alvarez returned to the sideline for the 2013 Rose Bowl after Bret Bielema, his self-appointed successor, became Arkansas' head coach in early December.

He's part of the athletic director advisory group in the BCS governance structure. Alvarez recently told ESPN.com he would serve on the future college football selection committee if asked.

Alvarez's contract bump comes as no surprise, and most Wisconsin fans will be pleased to see he's not going anywhere. Wisconsin is in good shape in the major sports and is finally upgrading its outdated facilities. Construction on the Student-Athlete Performance Center is ongoing and will bring Wisconsin closer to its Big Ten brethren.
