The final 2009 edition of Rooting Interest takes a look at who Big Ten bowl hopefuls should be pulling for this week on the gridiron. Something tells me there will be plenty of burnt orange being worn around Iowa City and State College on Saturday night.

Once again, Ohio State knows it's heading to the Rose Bowl and will learn its opponent Thursday night. I think the Buckeyes should root for Oregon State, but both Pac-10 teams provide formidable tests.

IOWA (10-2, 6-2)
Goal:
BCS at-large berth
Primary competitor: Penn State
Should root for ...
  • Texas to beat Nebraska. A Longhorns victory virtually guarantees them a spot in the BCS title game, freeing up an extra opening for the Fiesta Bowl, which remains very interested in Iowa. More important, it prevents the Big 12 from getting two teams into BCS bowls, as Texas would certainly earn an at-large selection if it loses to the Huskers. And it allows Iowa to root against Nebraska, which is always good.
  • Cincinnati to beat Pitt. It's highly unlikely the Big East will earn a BCS at-large berth, but just to make sure, Iowa benefits from Cincinnati completing its undefeated season and knocking Pitt out of the mix.
  • Arizona to beat USC. The Hawkeyes' 27-17 triumph against Arizona looks like the Big Ten's top nonconference win this season, so every Arizona victory helps Iowa, especially one against a ranked USC team.
  • Wisconsin to beat Hawaii. Iowa beat Wisconsin back on Oct. 17, but the Badgers could inch closer to the Top 25 by beating Hawaii to finish the regular season at 9-3. Every Wisconsin victory helps Iowa, while Penn State didn't face the Badgers this fall.
  • New Mexico State to beat Boise State. Don't hold your breath on this one, Hawkeyes fans, but an Aggies upset of Boise State would knock the Broncos out of BCS contention.
  • Arkansas State to beat Western Kentucky (Thursday night). Iowa beat the Red Wolves, who have really struggled most of the fall. Still, every ASU victory helps Iowa.
PENN STATE (10-2, 6-2)
Goal:
BCS at-large berth
Primary competitor: Iowa
Should root for ...
  • Texas to beat Nebraska. It keeps the Big 12 to only one BCS entry and would allow the Fiesta Bowl to possibly select Penn State with one of its replacement picks after losing Texas to the BCS title game.
  • Cincinnati to beat Pitt. This ensures the Big East has only one BCS entry. Plus, Penn State fans should always root for Pitt to lose.
  • USC to crush Arizona. Iowa can flaunt its September win against Arizona, so every Wildcats loss weakens Iowa's profile.
  • New Mexico State to beat Boise State. See above.
  • Western Kentucky to beat Arkansas State (Thursday night). Iowa barely beat a bad Arkansas State team on Oct. 3, and a Red Wolves loss to Western Kentucky, which already has fired its coach, wouldn't help Iowa one bit.
  • Hawaii to beat Wisconsin. A Wisconsin loss diminishes the value of Iowa's win against the Badgers in October. Penn State didn't play Wisconsin this year.
WISCONSIN (8-3, 6-2)
Goal:
Outback Bowl
Primary competitor: Northwestern
Should root for ...
  • Whatever it takes to get two Big Ten teams into BCS bowls, namely wins by Texas and Cincinnati. This moves every bowl team up a spot and would give Wisconsin an excellent shot at the Outback Bowl, as long as the Badgers take care of Hawaii on Saturday (ESPN2, 11:30 p.m. ET).
  • Fresno State to beat Illinois. The Badgers beat Fresno State back in September, so every Bulldogs victory helps them. Wisconsin never faced Illinois, while Northwestern beat the Fighting Illini and would benefit from an Illinois victory.
NORTHWESTERN (8-4, 6-2)
Goal: Outback Bowl
Primary competitor: Wisconsin
Should root for ...
  • Whatever it takes to get two Big Ten teams into BCS bowls, namely wins by Texas and Cincinnati. This moves every bowl team up a spot and would give Northwestern a shot at the Outback Bowl, especially if Wisconsin loses Saturday night.
  • Wisconsin to lose to Hawaii. This would drop the Badgers to 8-4, the same record as the Wildcats, who hold the head-to-head victory against UW on Nov. 21. Wisconsin also would close the regular season with consecutive losses, while Northwestern went 3-0 in November and beat two ranked opponents. This would be a great selling point for the Wildcats.
  • Illinois to beat Fresno State. Northwestern beat Illinois on Nov. 14, so every Illini victory benefits the Wildcats. Also, Wisconsin's victory against Fresno State would lose some value if the Bulldogs fall to 3-8 Illinois. Wisconsin didn't play Illinois this fall.
MICHIGAN STATE (6-6, 4-4)
Goal: Alamo Bowl
Primary competitor: Minnesota
Should root for ...
  • Whatever it takes to get two Big Ten teams into BCS bowls, namely wins by Texas and Cincinnati. This moves every bowl team up a spot and would give Michigan State a pretty good shot at the Alamo Bowl.
  • Washington to beat No. 19 California. Minnesota lost to Cal in September, so a Bears loss would weaken Minnesota's profile.
  • Central Michigan to beat Ohio (Friday night). Michigan State's loss to the Chippewas on Sept. 12 really stings, but at least the Spartans could say they fell to the eventual MAC champions if CMU takes care of Ohio.
  • Illinois to beat Fresno State. Michigan State handled Illinois in October, so an Illini victory would help the Spartans. Minnesota lost to Illinois on Nov. 7.
  • No more of its players to get in trouble with the law (sorry, couldn't resist).
MINNESOTA (6-6, 3-5)
Goal:
Alamo Bowl
Primary competitor: Michigan State
Should root for ...
  • Whatever it takes to get two Big Ten teams into BCS bowls, namely wins by Texas and Cincinnati. This moves every bowl team up a spot and would give Minnesota a chance for the Alamo Bowl. More important, it would ensure the Gophers won't be heading to Detroit for the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.
  • California to beat Washington. The more Cal wins and rises in the rankings, the less a Minnesota loss to the Bears on Sept. 19 hurts the Gophers' overall profile.
  • Ohio to beat Central Michigan (Friday night). Michigan State stumbled against Central Michigan at home, so every Chippewas loss hurts the Spartans.

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis made his first public comments about the recent suspensions and dismissals of football players in the wake of an on-campus assault Nov. 22.

Speaking with beat reporters in North Carolina before Michigan State's basketball game Tuesday night, Hollis said incident has done some damage.

"Obviously, the whole situation is a disappointment to me as an alumnus and as an athletic director," Hollis said. "We made a swift decision about the information available to us."

Hollis added that it was "important" that Michigan State released the names of players identified as being present during the assault even though no one has been charged with a crime.

"It was a team-based decision that coach [Mark] Dantonio made for reasons we will keep internal," Hollis said. "And as the process moves forward, we'll see where it goes."

Hollis also said Michigan State won't turn down an opportunity to play in a bowl game despite the prospect of having as many as 10 players inactive because of suspensions or dismissals.
