There's nothing in writing just yet, but Minnesota athletics director Joel Maturi made it clear Sunday that head coach Tim Brewster will receive a contract extension.

Brewster previously had said an extension was in the works, but Maturi's comments to reporters in Arizona take away any remaining doubt. Maturi had been a bit non-committal about Brewster's future, and Thursday's Insight Bowl matchup against Iowa State looked like a potential make-or-break game for the third-year coach.

But win or lose Thursday, Brewster should be back for the fourth season at Minnesota.

"We need some stability," Maturi said. "We've proven that just changing coaches at Minnesota isn't the answer. We need stability. I'm excited about the recruits that are here and those who are coming and coach Brewster deserves the right to coach those recruits."

Brewster also will be in a better position to lure more top-level recruits to Minnesota if he receives an extension. Despite his struggles in Big Ten play (6-18), in November games and against Minnesota's top rivals, Brewster continues to recruit well to Minnesota. He would be in a tough spot for recruiting with just two years left on his contract and no extension on the horizon.

There will undoubtedly be a lot of pressure on Brewster next fall, but he deserves the chance to coach his own recruits in key roles. For the first time in Brewster's tenure, Minnesota could retain both of its coordinators, creating some much needed continuity. The time has come for a coach who came to Minneapolis talking about Big Ten championships to start backing it up.

The terms of an extension must still be "ironed out," Maturi said, but the need for one is obvious.

"We need stability with the coach, with the coaching staff," Maturi said. "And this should also bode well for the recruiting going on and for the future of Gophers football."
