Northwestern's Bacher questionable for Minnesota

Northwestern starting quarterback C.J. Bacher is listed as questionable for Saturday's game at No. 17 Minnesota (ESPN2, noon ET) after injuring his hamstring against Indiana.

Bacher isn't expected to do much at Tuesday's practice, and his status will be evaluated throughout the week. He didn't suffer a hamstring tear but came up limping after a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Junior Mike Kafka will start against the Gophers if Bacher cannot play. As a freshman, Kafka won Northwestern's quarterback competition and started the first four games in 2006 before sustaining a leg injury. Bacher became the starter in Week 8 of that year and has held the position ever since.

"Mike's started games for us here in the past, Mike prepares every week to be the starter," head coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "He's been a play away the whole season. This is his opportunity. He'll manage the game well."

Starting running back Tyrell Sutton will likely undergo wrist surgery Tuesday after getting hurt in the third quarter against Indiana. Fitzgerald said it's doubtful Sutton will return before the end of the regular season.

The senior could be back for a bowl game.

Senior Omar Conteh, who started five games last year after Sutton sustained a high ankle sprain, will start against Minnesota.

"Omar played very, very well last year when he had the opportunity," Fitzgerald said. "He's been chomping at the bit, he's had a great attitude. He'll be prepared."
