No game in the country ended with a wilder finish than Northern Iowa-Iowa on Saturday. I learned a new rule, and apparently so did Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz and his assistants.
Iowa also made history by becoming the first team in Division I history to block field goal attempts on consecutive plays. Four other teams have blocked two field goal attempts in the same quarter, but never on back-to-back plays.
Despite the bizarre rule about recovering a blocked kick behind the line of scrimmage, it's hard to fault Ferentz and his coaches for telling players to stay away. Anyone who has seen former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Leon Lett turn into a turkey on Thanksgiving can attest that avoiding a blocked field goal is usually the smart play.
