Northwestern is scheduled to open the 2009 season by hosting Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 5, but the RedHawks are interested in starting the Mike Haywood era a little closer to home.
The Dayton Daily News reported earlier this week that Miami (Ohio) is in discussions with Kentucky about having the teams meet Sept. 5 at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati.
Officials from both schools confirmed the discussions, and a Miami spokesman told the Daily News the game is "very much a possibility."
Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips told me Thursday that he's not aware of Miami's intentions to move the game at Ryan Field.
"We have a signed contract and expect them to honor the contract," Phillips wrote in a text message.
This will be an interesting situation to monitor during the next few weeks. Northwestern already has an FCS team (Towson) on the schedule, so it will be hard to find an FBS replacement for Miami if the game is cancelled. There's also the remote posibility the teams could reschedule for later in the season.
