Big Ten rankings: No. 7, James White

By Adam Rittenberg

We're in the home stretch of the preseason player rankings, based on past performance and potential impact for the 2011 season. Look, it's another Wisconsin running back ...

No. 7: James White, RB, Wisconsin, So., 5-10, 195

2010 numbers: Appeared in 12 games and led Wisconsin in both rushing yards (1,052) and all-purpose yards (1,469); ranked seventh in the Big Ten in rushing average (87.7 ypg); his average of 6.74 yards per carry ranked second in team history (minimum: 100 attempts); scored 14 rushing touchdowns; had 11 receptions for 88 yards; 17 kick returns for 329 yards

Why he's here: White is one of the most exciting ball-carriers in the Big Ten, displaying tremendous quickness and elusiveness near the line of scrimmage. He wrong-footed more than a handful of defenders in 2010, providing a new element to Wisconsin's bruising ground game. The Florida native eclipsed 100 rushing yards in four conference games en route to earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors. Although teammate Montee Ball could emerge as Wisconsin's featured back this season, White will remain a big part of the plan, both as a rusher and as a receiver out of the backfield. White worked on strengthening his lower body during the offseason and should add more of a power element to his game. But he'll still make defenders look bad.
