Tracking our B1G fantasy teams: Week 6
By Brian Bennett
Well, I saw this one coming.
I figured that Adam's Big Ten fantasy team, The Trombone Shorties, would come out on top in Week 5 because of some favorable matchups and because I was unwilling to drop Denard Robinson despite his bye week. And that's what happened, as Non-Gingervitis lost 127-107. I like to believe that Robinson would have had at least 20 points and I would have won had he played, but that's the breaks of the game.
Adam's 127 points represented his second-highest total of the year. He got 31 points from Taylor Martinez and 27 from Montee Ball. Adam being Adam, he dropped Kain Colter before the Northwestern quarterback's four-touchdown game. But Matt McGloin contributed 24 fantasy points, while Adam scored a rare waiver-wire victory with Purdue's Antavian Edison (16 points vs. Marshall).
My waiver-wire stud from last week was Iowa's Mark Weisman, who came through with 24 points, the same total as Braxton Miller. Jared Abbrederis also put up 20 points, but the goose egg from one of my QB spots was too much to overcome.
So now I hold on to a slim 3-2 lead in the season standings. And for a change, I get the first selection on this week's pickups ...
Brian adds Michigan RB Fitz Toussaint and drops Iowa RB Mark Weisman
Rationale: I'd gladly stick with Weisman for the long haul, but the Hawkeyes have a bye week and I need the points. Toussaint has yet to get untracked this season, but I think Michigan will look to re-establish its tailback after the bye week, even if it's not a great matchup against Purdue's stout defensive front.
Adam adds Wisconsin's defense and drops Ohio State's defense
Rationale: The silver bullets have been good to me, but they haven't faced an offense as diverse and powerful as Nebraska's. I'll take my chances with a Badgers defense that takes on a turnover-prone Illinois team that isn't scoring many points.
Brian adds Ohio State WR Devin Smith and drops Nebraska WR Kenny Bell
Rationale: This one may come back to haunt me, as Bell is capable of putting up a huge game this Saturday. But I really like how Smith has become Miller's go-to downfield guy, and on a stage this big I expect him to continue compiling highlights -- and hopefully fantasy points.
Adam drops Iowa's kickers for Northwestern's kickers
Rationale: The Hawkeyes are off this week, and Northwestern's Jeff Budzien has been fantastic, converting all 11 of his field-goal attempts this season and averaging a league-best 10.4 points per game.
