Tracking our B1G fantasy teams: Week 8

By Brian Bennett

Champions respond when challenged, and like the St. Louis Cardinals, my Big Ten fantasy team showed last week that it has the heart of a champion.

Not only did Non-Gingervitis whip Adam's Trombone Shorties, we did so with the highest point total in the two-year history of our fantasy challenge, with a final score of 175-110. Everything was clicking for my squad last week, led by standout quarterbacks Denard Robinson (38 fantasy points) and Braxton Miller (36). I also got 30 points from Venric Mark and 29 from Carlos Hyde, two great waiver-wire pickups for me last week.

Despite not having Taylor Martinez, Matt McGloin and Allen Robinson because of their bye weeks, the Shorties still managed to put up a fight. That was mostly thanks to Montee Ball, whose huge day at Purdue led to 43 fantasy points. Michigan's defense also added 22 points with its shutout of Illinois. Alas, Adam's waiver-wire work continues to resemble that of his Chicago Cubs, as Kain Colter (10 points) and Andrew Maxwell (7) didn't contribute much.

I now lead the season series 4-3, which would be good enough in baseball but is only halfway through our season. Rittenberg doesn't have to worry about bye weeks in Week 8, and he's got first pick on the wire:

Adam adds Nebraska WR Kenny Bell and drops Purdue WR Antavian Edison

Rationale: Although Edison has been a good producer and could have a big day against Ohio State's leaky defense, I've wanted the Bell-Robinson pairing at receiver for a while. Bell is one of the Big Ten's top big-play receivers, and I'm taking him while I can.

Brian adds Wisconsin's defense and drops Michigan State's defense

Rationale: The Spartans have great defensive numbers in real life, but their lack of turnovers forced means their fantasy numbers have been lacking. Wisconsin's defense has had a better fantasy season, and I like the Badgers' home matchup versus Minnesota better than Michigan State's road game at Michigan, even if the Spartans have mastered Denard Robinson over the years. Other than that, I'm standing pat on a team that scored 175 last week.

Adam adds Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez and drops Michigan State QB Andrew Maxwell

Rationale: Maxwell did nothing for me last week and faces a tough Michigan defense. Martinez's dual-threat ability makes him a good choice, and he put up big passing numbers against Northwestern last season.
