Report: Alvarez to coach UW in Rose Bowl

By Adam Rittenberg

Barry Alvarez is returning to the sideline in a place where he had his biggest successes.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that Alvarez, Wisconsin's athletic director, will serve as the Badgers' head coach for the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 against Stanford. Former coach Bret Bielema, speaking earlier Wednesday during his introductory news conference at Arkansas, also said Alvarez, 65, would coach the Badgers in Pasadena.

According to the State Journal, Wisconsin's team captains reached out to Alvarez to ask him to coach the team.

Alvarez is expected to announce the decision during a news conference scheduled for 11 a.m. ET Thursday. He served as Wisconsin's head coach from 1990-2005 and went 3-0 in Rose Bowls, the last victory coming against Stanford in the 2000 game. He handpicked Bielema to succeed him as coach before moving into the AD role.

Needless to say, the Rose Bowl got a lot more interesting. Wisconsin fans will be extremely fired up about this, and it looks like the players are, too.

More to come Thursday on this story.
