Illini to hire Greg Colby as D-line coach

By Adam Rittenberg

Illinois has filled one of its coaching-staff vacancies with a familiar name.

The Illini will hire Greg Colby as their new defensive line coach, replacing Keith Gilmore, who left last month for a post with North Carolina. Colby's hiring should be official Monday. He has spent the past five seasons as the head coach at Division II Millersville University, which announced his departure Friday.

A former Illinois player who started for three seasons, Colby served as an assistant at his alma mater from 1988-95, coaching linebackers and special teams. He has extensive Big Ten experience, serving as Michigan State's defensive line/outside linebackers coach from 1995-97 and Northwestern's defensive coordinator from 2002-2007.

Colby, who grew up near Champaign in Danville, Ill., went 11-44 at Millersville.

Illinois has one vacancy left on its staff after wide-receivers coach Billy Gonzales left the program last week.
