Thoughts on MSU's proposed logo

During Thursday's Big Ten chat, I received 15-20 questions asking me to weigh in on Michigan State's new logo for its athletic teams. Since I hadn't seen the new design, I decided to wait before offering my opinion, but the excitement level among fans was palpable.

After seeing the Spartans' new logo, which will be officially unveiled in April, I had one thought: What's the big deal?

Now we'll definitely have to wait and see the full presentation from the school, but after examining the images making the rounds on the Web, I don't see much of a difference.

Michigan State includes a new logo as part of an application that appears on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Web site. The main part of Spartan helmet looks a bit longer and sleeker overall, and the broken lines leading to the top of the helmet are now filled in. Other than that, I can't take much away from the new design. Looks like I'm not the only one.

Full disclosure: I've always really liked Michigan State's current logo, which is an upgrade from the block 'S'.

Again, it's important to wait for the full unveiling. There has to be much more involved.

"The Spartan logo, posted on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Web site, is a single element of a comprehensive brand and identity project that will be unveiled in April by Michigan State athletics," Michigan State athletics director Mark Hollis said in the statement. "As in all branding, the power of a single symbol cannot be appreciated or measured outside the context of the total presentation."

What are your thoughts on the new proposed logo? Love it? Hate it? Indifferent? I'll include some of your responses in my mailblog later today.
