Big Ten Ultimate Road Trip: Week 1

What would your fall look like if you had no restrictions on how you spent your Saturday? Every Big Ten game is an option to attend in person as you strive to see the best game, find the best gameday atmosphere and tailgating, or simply follow your favorite team or player on a weekly basis.

That is the premise of our Big Ten Ultimate Road Trip as Brian Bennett, Josh Moyer and Jesse Temple pick one game per week to attend.

We begin the series with Week 1.

Unanimous pick: Wisconsin vs. LSU

Josh Moyer: Have you seen the Week 1 slate? It’s nearly the football equivalent of being parched in the middle of the ocean: There are matchups all around but barely a one that’ll slake your thirst for great football. Four games involve FCS teams, and seven feature Group of 5 opponents.

And, as much as I’ve always wanted to visit Seattle, I’m afraid I’m going to have to skip the Rutgers-Washington game, thank you very much. This pick might be the biggest “road trip” no-brainer of the season. It has to be Wisconsin-LSU.

Good venue/environment? Check – Lambeau Field. Good matchup? Check – there are two potential Top 25 teams here. Exciting players? Hello, Corey Clement and Leonard Fournette, who both averaged 6.5 yards a carry during their last respective full seasons. Intrigue? LSU’s new defensive coordinator, Dave Aranda, just spent the past three years turning the Badgers’ defense into one of the nation’s best.

I could go on but, realistically, I could’ve also stopped after “Lambeau Field.” That’s more than enough for me. All but one of the other Week 1 matchups features the usual promise of B1G destinations, so this trip is particularly unique. Two FBS teams have never before played each other at Lambeau, and this is the first time in 33 years that a college game has taken place there. Plus, how many other opportunities this season will we have to dine at Brett Favre’s steakhouse? (Jesse’s buying.)

Any way you look at it, this is a “bucket list” type of game -- which is why this selection was unanimous. This game has just about everything we're looking for, and the venue is the absolute clincher.
