There has not been a lot to talk regarding the Bruins this summer, but one rumor has picked up steam in recent weeks: That the Bruins and Ducks might have been discussing a swap involving center David Krejci and winger Bobby Ryan.

The teams have had "exploratory" talks regarding Ryan, according to a source close to the situation, but Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli has made it known that Krejci and Milan Lucic (also mentioned in recent trade rumors) are not available.

This source also indicated that the Bruins, who are on a list of teams that Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash would approve a trade to, have dropped out of the sweepstakes for Nash. There have been reports that the asking price for Nash from the Bruins was any combination of Krejci, Lucic, Tyler Seguin and prized prospect Dougie Hamilton.

Chiarelli had already let it be known that Seguin and Hamilton were non-starters. Last week, Columbus general manager Scott Howson also told TSN that he wants "a couple of NHL forwards" in any trade for Nash. But according to a source, the sticking point between the Bruins and Blue Jackets was also that the Blue Jackets wanted an NHL defenseman with experience. Besides Zdeno Chara, who both sides understand isn't available, the Bruins don't have what the Blue Jackets are looking for.

With the uncertainty around Nathan Horton's return and the Bruins offense going stale in their first-round playoff loss to the Capitals, a player like Ryan (four 30-goal plus seasons) or Nash (reached the 30-goal plateau nine times and the 40-goal plateau twice) would be a welcome addition. The Ducks have publicly expressed their desire for a second-line center and Krejci would fit the bill there. So, from an outside perspective, such a deal might make sense. But according to the source, the Bruins still feel Krejci and Lucic are key parts of their core and if they were to trade them, it would have to be for something better than whatever might have been offered by the Ducks or Blue Jackets.
