Bruins-Rangers to open Thursday night

Boston vs. New York will hit the playoff ice for the first time in 40 years when the Bruins host the Rangers to kick off their Eastern Conference semifinal series Thursday night at TD Garden.

The Rangers advanced with their first Game 7 road victory ever, a 5-0 whitewash of the Washington Capitals.

The Original Six clubs were regular playoff foes in the early 1970s, when they met three times in a four-year span. The Bruins knocked off the Rangers in their Stanley Cup seasons of 1970 and 1972, while the Rangers beat the Bruins in 1973.
