WILMINGTON, Mass. -- Bruins winger Brad Marchand addressed the media Thursday after a Bruins “captain’s practice” and had nothing new to report on contract negotiations between his agent Wade Arnott and Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli.
“Nope. Nothing new,” Marchand, who is a restricted free agent, said quickly when asked if there were any updates on negotiations with the Bruins. “You know what, it’s how it goes sometimes and it’s been a long summer. I’m anxious to get something done.”
Marchand said he hopes that he is signed by the time training camp starts but reiterated that it is a day-to-day process right now.
“Again, we’re taking it day-by-day and I hope it’s done before then,” Marchand said. “That’s the goal and again we’ll see.”
The Bruins playoff hero, who had 19 points in 25 playoff games, including two goals and an assist in the cup-clinching Game 7 win in Vancouver, was non-committal on training reporting to camp regardless of whether a deal is done or not.
“I’m not thinking that far ahead right now, it’s just day-to-day and hopefully it gets done before then,” said Marchand, who also said he is updated every day by his agent. “I really don’t know. I’ll leave it up to my agent. I hope so but then again we’ll see.”
As far as his frustration level goes right now, Marchand didn’t express any and there did not seem to be any animosity.
“With winning the Stanley Cup, it’s been very busy for everyone trying to plan their parties and have their day with [the Stanley Cup] and it’s been a very short summer,” Marchand said. “A lot of stuff to do in a very short time so sometimes things take longer than others. It’s just taken a little longer than maybe some other stuff, that’s all. I’m anxious to get a deal done but I just want to be here and be on the ice with the guys and that’s something I’ll look forward to.”
Marchand also didn’t seem worried that there would be any bad blood leftover between Chiarelli and Arnott from the Phil Kessel negotiations. Kessell and the Bruins couldn’t agree on a new deal and then eventually he was traded to Toronto.
“I’ve never thought about it, I have no idea,” Marchand said when asked if the negotiating history of Arnott and Chiarelli may be playing a role in the stalled negotiations. “I knew he was [Kessel’s] agent but it’s a completely different situation.”
The unsigned winger has been a regular in internet tabloids this summer, but while he admitted that maybe he went a “little too hard” celebrating, it was a matter of him being young and achieving a lifelong dream.
“It comes up every now and then but we won the Stanley Cup and I’m 23 years-old and maybe I went a little harder than I should’ve, but it’s something that we’ve dreamed of our whole lives and that’s all it was.”
Marchand then insisted he was in good shape and has been working hard to be ready for the upcoming season.
“The goal is to be in the best possible shape I can for the season and that’s all I’ve been doing is trying to stay in shape,” said Marchand who has been skating with teammates since Saturday. “I’m in good shape. I had my fun for a week or two but I trained a lot harder after that.”
