Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli confirmed on Monday that Johnny Boychuk, who didn't practice with the team Monday morning, has a "mild concussion" after a huge hit by Chris Neil in the Bruins' 5-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night.

Coach Claude Julien said on Monday that Boychuk is day-to-day. It seems unlikely that he'll be available for the Bruins' rematch with the Senators on Tuesday night.

Chiarelli said that Boychuk's injury didn't factor into his decision to acquire two defensemen, Mike Mottau and Greg Zanon, bringing the number of blue-liners with the big club to eight. He said it was more of a function of adding overall depth.

"What I've seen over my time in hockey, defensemen can drop like flies. They really can," Chiarelli said. "You can never have enough defensemen. We wanted to have eight NHL defensemen in the mix, so that was the blueprint I was working off of."
