Increased work on horizon for Rask?
By James Murphy
WILMINGTON, Mass. -- Is there a difference of opinion between Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli and coach Claude Julien on how Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask has been used thus far in the 2011-12 season?
In a teleconference on Tuesday night, Chiarelli was asked about the statements he and Julien made regarding the amount of games Rask would play this season and how they expected an increased workload for Rask to spell Tim Thomas, who played 82 games last season counting the playoffs. Thus far Rask has had only two starts to Thomas’ six and the GM said he expected Rask to have more by now.
“You're right. We did say that. It's not -- there's kind of a sense-feel way of addressing the goalies too and in fairness to Tuukka, he probably should have gotten another start here or there. But you see Tim and how he's playing and you want him to recapture some of the stuff that he had from last year,” Chiarelli said. “So I'd have to defer that one to Claude. We've had discussions on the goaltender situation. I think you'll see in the end, I think you'll see it go into line with what we originally put out there.”
Julien was apprised of his boss’ comments regarding the use of Rask thus far and defended his handling of the goalie situation. He said Rask probably will be used more in the coming weeks.
“All I know is we have a plan to use Tuukka more this year. So that’s certainly not a judgment that has to be made after a month of the season,” Julien said. “At the end of the year, let’s look at how many games Tuukka will have played and then figure out whether we followed our plan or not. But right now, when you’ve got three or four days off, I don’t think a guy that led us to the Stanley Cup is really tired.
"As you look at the schedule in the second half, we talked about it becoming heavier, this is where Tuukka’s really going to have to step up and help us out. He’s still going to see some game time, but I don’t think I would judge how we said we’d use him or whatever with a month into the season with this kind of schedule.”
