Celtics captain Paul Pierce underwent arthroscopic irrigation on his right knee Wednesday and is expected to miss the next two weeks, according to the team.
After a knee infection was discovered following Tuesday's win over the Pacers, Pierce underwent the cleansing at New England Baptist Hospital Wednesday morning under the direction of team physician Brian McKeon.
Pierce will not travel with the team on its four-game road trip that starts Friday with a Christmas Day showdown in Orlando and continues with three games out west.
Team owner Wyc Grousbeck told Comcast SportsNet, the television home of the Celtics, that Pierce experienced discomfort after Tuesday's win over the Pacers, in which he scored 16 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.
"He had the knee rinsed and irrigated, and it will require some antibiotics," Grousbeck told CSN. "It's nothing major at all, but it will take some time to come back from. He'll be out for a week, maybe two, and will definitely miss the four games on the road."
The Celtics played without forward Kevin Garnett (right thigh bruise) on Tuesday, and recalled forward Bill Walker from the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League Wednesday. Walker did not travel with the team to Orlando, but is expected to join them soon.
Pierce is averaging 18.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game this season. He scored 16 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's come-from-behind triumph over the Pacers.
Pierce appeared at his usual postgame press conference and again in the locker room following the game, and did not appear to be any worse for wear at that point.
Pierce did appear to be struggling over the first eight games in December, scoring more than 20 points in just one of those contests. He seemed to snap out of his funk when he tied a franchise record by connecting on all six 3-pointers he attempted, while scoring 29 points in a win over the Timberwolves Sunday at the TD Garden.
