BOSTON -- Despite playing without three starters in Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce, the Celtics weren't about to feel sorry for themselves Saturday night against the Raptors.
The Celtics got key contributions from players that might normally be stuck at the back of the rotation and topped the Raptors 103-96 to snap a three-game losing streak at TD Garden.
"We talked about that all day yesterday," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. "We're at home, going out on a road trip, and we have to come into the game with the attitude you expect to win. I didn't think we had that attitude in Phoenix. I thought we showed up and said, 'What's going to happen?' I thought tonight we showed up with an attitude that we're going to find a way to win. We didn't know how, but we were going to find it."
Kendrick Perkins said no team wants to deal with injuries, but the Celtics knew there were players in their locker room eager for a chance to shine.
"You don't wish injuries on people, but when some guys are hurt, it's your time to step in and show that you can play."
Second-year guard J.R. Giddens started and logged a career-high 20 minutes; he drew praise despite scoring just two points. Lester Hudson played 11 minutes as the backup point guard and chipped in five points.
Boston also got increased efforts from subs-turned-starters Tony Allen (14 points, 7 assists) and Rasheed Wallace (16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals).
As Toronto's DeMar DeRozan noted, "Without their main players, they still go out there and play tough, play hard, and play like they want to be a championship team."
