With all the talk and hype around the Paul Pierce vs. LeBron James matchup, the wizards at ESPN's Stats and Information crunched the numbers for when Pierce guarded James in games since the Big Three united in 2007. Their findings: While James has put up big numbers against Boston during that span, he’s actually shot well below his averages on most of the plays when Pierce is the on-ball defender:

LeBron James FG Pct by Play Type
Situation -- vs. Paul Pierce -- Average in Span
Isolation -- 29.2 (14 for 48) -- 42.0
Pick & Roll -- 39.4 (13 for 33) -- 44.2
Spot-Up -- 23.1 (6 for 26) -- 39.9
Other -- 24.0 (6 for 25) -- 44.8

*As on-ball defender (does not include transition, cuts, etc.)
