Former Celtic great Cedric Maxwell and current Celtics radio analyst Cedric Maxwell has one word to describe the Celtics-Lakers rivalry: “Hatred”.
At least that’s how he’d describe it back in his day.
“It’s different now,” said Maxwell, who played a big role in the Celtics ‘ Finals victory over the Lakers in 1984. “Players have a tendency because they like each other, they text each other, tweet each other, they do all these things now. It didn’t happen during our time.
“I’ve always said this, if I saw one of those guys on the side of the road I would speed up if their car was broken down. There was no way I was going to stop and help them. Right now I think somebody would actually call the police and help them.”
Maxwell also made a prediction for the upcoming Celtics-Lakers Finals.
“I think the Celtics win the series but you have to look at certain factors. Pau Gasol isn’t the [same guy] was saw a couple of years ago. Kevin Garnett over the last decade has been arguably one of the best skilled [big] men in the NBA. Now I think Gasol has taken that over a little bit because of age. Kobe Bryant is the best closer in the game but still I think the Celtics have the best starting five and has the best defense.”
