After admitting Tuesday he was on the bubble with Team USA set to make a final cut, Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo later withdrew from the men's national team, citing family matters to tend to before the 2010-11 NBA season.

“Rajon came to us and said he was going to withdraw from the team, that he had some family matters to attend to and some things to take care of before the NBA season," said Team USA director Jerry Colangelo in announcing the final 12-man roster for the 2010 FIBA World Championships that begin later this month in Turkey. "He did an outstanding job during our training, we appreciate the effort and commitment he made to our program and he completely has our support."

Rondo did not play in Team USA's win over Spain Sunday and, after traveling with the team to Greece, acknowledged Tuesday the benching -- the first since his rookie season in the NBA -- didn't bode well for his future with the team.

"I think I'm on the bubble," Rondo told ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan. "Just looking at the obvious -- I got a DNP last game. That pretty much speaks for itself."

Rondo started three exhibitions with Team USA, but played poorly Saturday against Lithuania, leading to Derrick Rose taking his starting job in the matchup against highly touted Spain.

Rondo's departure ends a roller coaster relationship that saw Rondo pledge allegiance to Team USA after accepting an invite to train in Las Vegas last month, this after sending mixed signals about his interest in international competition. He seemed like a bubble player at the start of camp, but soon elevated to a starter by the time the camp shifted to New York in late July.

"It wasn't that [Colangelo] needed to convince me, it was just a question of when was the right moment," Rondo told ESPN.com in July. "I want to play, he made the phone call and he wanted me to go, and it wasn't like negotiation or he had to convince me to play, I had just needed to get away from basketball for a minute, relax and enjoy myself and my family a little bit. Because this, if I make the team, is going to take up most of the summer. And then a week after it's over we go to training camp."

Celtics coach Doc Rivers even offered his blessing while discussing Rondo's participation at Shaquille O'Neal's introduction earlier this month. Rivers noted that Rondo would be limited to 15-20 minutes of action, but that Rivers encouraged him to participate despite the risk of injury.

Seemingly pegged a starter in a deep backcourt, Rondo's time with Team USA went sour quickly. He was benched after a sluggish start against Lithuania Saturday, then didn't leave his warm-ups Sunday against Spain.

"It's not so much what Rajon has to show, it's what our team needs," said Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski. "We've found a good lineup, and the international game is so different from the NBA game, you can ask any of these guys. Part of it is to make sure that we try not to have two non-shooters out on the court, and there's the physicality, too."

The finalized roster features Rose (Chicago Bulls); Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets); Tyson Chandler (Dallas Mavericks); Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies); Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers); Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers); and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder).
