Earlier this month, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge indicated that his team would stick close to home and hold its annual training camp at its own practice facility in Waltham. With a late audible, the Green will hit the road instead and spend five days in Newport, R.I., according to the team's media relations staff.

As it has each of the past two seasons, Boston will camp on the campus of Salve Regina University, holding daily practice sessions from Sept. 28-Oct. 2 before reverting to its home base. The Celtics open an eight-game exhibition slate on Wednesday, Oct. 6 against the Philadelphia 76ers in Manchester, N.H.

The 2010-11 kicks off in earnest on Sept. 27 when the Celtics host their annual Media Day in Waltham.

The Celtics have held training camp on the road in each of the three seasons since the new Big Three was united, trekking to Europe in 2007 before back-to-back treks to Newport.

Captain Paul Pierce opined during the offseason that he believed the team would benefit from getting away for a few days to enhance team bonding as Boston welcomes veterans like Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal, but expressed an interest in moving away from Newport, which may have contributed to the initial decision to camp in Waltham.
