Waiver deadline arrives today
In their quest for additional size, the Celtics agreed to a deal with recently waived Ryan Hollins Thursday and he could join the team as early as Friday's game in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the Pacers won the Kyrylo Fesenko sweepstakes and the Spurs appear poised to haul in Boris Diaw, leaving the big-man bone virtually bare (barring an unexpected move today).
The other side of the coin here is that Boston needs to make its own roster decisions today. The team has two buyout candidates in Chris Wilcox and Jermaine O'Neal, both of whom are out of the year and one of which will almost certainly be bought out to make room for Hollins (there's no tremendous rush to do the other, as it's not as if that player will be able to join a playoff roster). It does makes sense for Boston to eventually clear both roster spots if it desires to add another body down the road (even if the Celtics just needed a body to help them get through the regular season and not carry the player onto the playoff roster).
The one other question mark is Marquis Daniels. Earlier this week, Daniels' agent Mark Bartelstein admitted to having some conversations with Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge about a potential buyout. Daniels might be interested in going elsewhere if his role is not going to pick up in Boston. It's somewhat telling that he was the only available body that did not get off the bench Thursday night in Milwaukee. That said, the Celtics learned the hard way last year the peril of not having enough wing depth when Daniels suffered a season-ending spine injury, so maybe the team is inclined to keep him for emergency purposes.
