The Boston Celtics have hired Jay Larranaga as an assistant coach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.
Larranaga, son of University of Miami basketball head coach Jim Larranaga, was the head coach of the NBA Developmental League's Erie Bayhawks for the past two seasons (compiling a 60-40 record), leading the club to consecutive playoff berths. Additionally, Larranaga serves as the head coach of Ireland's Senior Men's National Team.
Larranaga played collegiate ball at Bowling Green University, before embarking on an extensive professional career in Europe.
While details of Larranaga's role are unspecified at this time, he's developed a standout reputation for helping the development of younger players. This should prove useful to Boston, which either added or re-signed a wealth of youthful talent this offseason, including rookies Jared Sullinger, Kris Joseph and Fab Melo, along with Courtney Lee, Jeff Green and Brandon Bass. Add in a player like Avery Bradley, who is only 21 years old, and there will be plenty of guys for Larranaga to work with should he take such a direction with the team.
