Stevens' teams broke several C's hearts

By Jason McCallum

Brad Stevens will soon be introducing himself to his Celtics players, and in doing so, he may have a few uncomfortable moments.

Three members of the Celtics roster (once all trades become official) had their hearts broken by Stevens-coached Butler teams when they played college basketball.

On December 19, 2009, Butler beat Xavier and current Celtic Jordan Crawford, 69-68, on a Gordon Hayward layup with 1.2 seconds remaining.

Four months later, in the 2010 Sweet 16, No. 5 seeded Butler defeated No. 1 seed Syracuse, 63-59. Soon-to-be Celtic Kris Joseph (once the deal sending Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce becomes official) scored six points that day in a losing effort for the Orange.

The third of the narrow wins that share this common bond came on January 19, 2013, when No. 15 Butler's Roosevelt Jones stole an inbounds pass intended for Kelly Olynyk and made a buzzer-beating jumper for a 64-63 win over Olynyk and No. 8 Gonzaga.

Stevens will no doubt take great care in coming up with ways for Olynyk, the Celtics first-round pick, to get the ball come this fall.
