Celtics expected to sign Vander Blue

The Boston Celtics appear set to sign D-League guard Vander Blue to a 10-day contract on Wednesday to add much-needed depth to a thinned backcourt.

The Celtics, previously overstocked at the guard position, traded away Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks last week, while excusing Keith Bogans from the team. Rajon Rondo returned to the starting lineup after missing nearly a full year following an ACL tear, but is on a minute restriction. When Avery Bradley sprained his right ankle in the first half of Tuesday's loss to the Miami Heat, Boston's need for guard depth was heightened.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens acknowledged the possibility of adding Blue after Tuesday's game, but told reporters that nothing was official. Yahoo! Sports first reported Boston's intent to sign Blue. On his verified Twitter account (@veezy_SQ), Blue retweeted messages congratulating him on joining the Celtics while tweeting, "God is amazing! I'm speechless right now ... all it took was patience."

Blue spent training camp with the Philadelphia 76ers before being a late cut. He signed overseas in Israel, but spent only a short time with Maccabi Rishon LeZion. Earlier this month, Blue latched on with the Delaware 87ers, a D-League affiliate of the 76ers, and averaged 19 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists over 30.5 minutes per game in four appearances.

The Celtics brought Blue to Waltham as part of their pre-draft workouts this summer.

Blue, a 6-foot-5 guard, will be the second 10-day contract added to Boston's roster as the Celtics inked Chris Johnson out of the D-League on Friday.
