This week’s Celtics Mailbag finds readers doing a lot of finger-pointing in regards to Boston’s recent struggles and offering plenty of ideas on how to reshape the roster with the trade deadline now less than a month away. Among the topics:

* Have the jumper-happy Celtics given up on attacking the rim?
* How much should we blame Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers?
* Assessing what's available as the trade deadline nears
* Is it better to wave the white flag or stay the course?

Mailbag: Bradley's sudden impact

The Celtics elected to spend a couple of days basking in Orlando sunshine in advance of the back end of a home-and-home with the Magic on Thursday night at the Amway Center. The slight break in the action of a chaotic, condensed season affords us the opportunity to dip into the Celtics Mailbag and tackle your questions. Here's a sample:
Q: Do you think Monday night's dominating performance over the Magic should put fans at ease? Really, how encouraged should we feel? -- Shant (Atlanta, Ga.)

A: How can you not be encouraged by that defensive display? This Celtics season has sort of played out like losing your dog. The first few days you're all positive and holding out hope that he'll show up on the doorstep. But a few weeks pass and you're resigned to the fact that maybe he's just not coming back. Well, that was the Celtics' defense. We thought we saw it at times, maybe went running down the street hoping it was our lost pal (nope, just the neighbor's dog frolicking at the nearest hydrant). But playing a quality opponent without a third of their roster, including two starters, the Celtics put together an absolutely dominating defensive effort against Orlando. Yep, Buster's back home and we're feeding him unhealthy amounts of table scraps because we're just so pumped to see him again. Might even let him sleep in the bed tonight. Of course, he'll be back in the cage if he ever tries to run off again. Rambling dog analogy aside, enjoy it and let's see what happens from here.

AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli Paul Pierce and coach Doc Rivers share a moment after Tuesday's win in Sacramento.
After staying an extra night in Sacramento due to the weather woes back home, the Boston Celtics flew back to town Wednesday, putting a successful four-game road trip behind them and bracing for a stretch that will feature a visit from four of the top teams in the NBA over the next two weeks. Here's a look at Wednesday's stories and headlines:

--CELTICS MAILBAG: IT'S ALL GOOD FOR GREEN--
As the Celtics trek home from a successful four-game road trip, a three-game cushion atop the Eastern Conference standings in their checked baggage, there are plenty of reasons for optimism. Not only is the team playing inspired ball, particularly against the league's top competition, but it's nearing full health, with both Delonte West and Jermaine O'Neal pegged at (tentative) late-February returns. But there's also plenty of work ahead for the Celtics even before the All-Star break arrives. That includes a daunting home slate to start the month, featuring visits from the Mavericks and Magic -- two teams with victories over the Celtics this season. The following week, the Lakers and Heat visit, and after the All-Star festivities, Boston goes back out west for another four-game road trip. You can expect a few bumps in February, but optimism reigns at the moment.

Mailbag: Midseason matters

The Celtics make the turn to the back nine of the NBA regular season Friday night when they welcome the Utah Jazz to TD Garden to cap a six-game homestand. With half of its 82-game slate complete, Boston boasts a glossy 32-9 record -- the best mark in the Eastern Conference -- and has positioned itself well as the jockeying begins for playoff seeding.

Most impressively, the Celtics have done it amidst a never-ending flurry of injuries, which leaves coach Doc Rivers wondering what his team's true potential is when -- or maybe "if" is the better word -- his team can get healthy.

"Record-wise, obviously, I'm happy," Rivers said before Wednesday's win over the Detroit Pistons. "You always think you should have won more games. But you never count the ones you probably should have lost, you only count the ones you probably should have won. So I'm happy that way, but we don't know yet, team-wise, [because] we haven't really had [a healthy roster] and I don't know how much that will impact us later.

"You just want to keep getting better and we see small signs of that, at least with our second unit. With guys out, we've never had the chance to work [at full strength] so far, and that's the only area of concern for me. We really haven't gotten the second unit as a group yet. All that missed time, I don't know what that will do to us later."

Rivers isn't the only one with questions. In our midseason mailbag, we tackle the five most commons questions we've heard from fans in recent days (non-Rasheed Wallace-related questions, at least):

Mailbag: Within reach

Brian Babineau/NBAE/Getty ImagesThe return of Rajon Rondo has jump-started the Celtics again.
Welcome to the first Celtics Mailbag of the new calendar year. We put our letter sack on the shelf during the holidays, so it was fun to dive back in and see the gamut of emotions displayed by readers from the tail end of Boston's 14-game winning streak to the Christmas Day loss in Orlando to the all-out freakout over Kevin Garnett's injury in late December.

Yes, there's rarely a dull moment with these Celtics and this week is no exception. In the middle of a stretch that features six games in eight days, Boston has ripped off three straight wins, including Wednesday's fingernail-chomping triumph over a San Antonio team with the best record in basketball.

As the midpoint of the season inches closer (Boston's 41st game is Jan. 19 against Detroit, even if the All-Star break isn't for another month -- and 13 games -- after that), let's dive into the latest 'bag.

Mailbag: Can it continue?

Sam Sharpe/US PresswireKevin Garnett and the Celtics have won 12 games in a row, but injuries are mounting.
If not for the snowflakes and crowded mall parking lots, you might have been able to trick yourself into thinking it was April this week as the hype and excitement surrounding the Boston Celtics jumped up a notch.

While the Celtics have quietly put together a league-best 12-game winning streak, interest surely peaked for Wednesday's thriller against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden and spilled into Thursday when All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo got shelved for a couple weeks in order to heal a sprained left ankle (and the other maladies he's battled in what some pundits -- including TNT's Charles Barkley -- have dubbed an MVP-caliber season).

Mounting injuries, plus a weariness about a post-Christmas collapse, means the Celtics Mailbag is still receiving as many letters as the North Pole this week.

Lingering concerns

AP Photo/Winslow TownsonFans are worried about injuries despite a nine-game winning streak.
Winning streaks have a way of keeping the workload light for our Celtics Mailbag letter carrier. But, the Celtics have a way of keeping things interesting even when they're riding a nine-game winning streak, so there are few days off for our postman.

Even after a thrilling 102-101 win on the second night of a back-to-back Thursday in Philadelphia, highlighted by spry Kevin Garnett's alley-oop layup off a Rajon Rondo feed with 1.4 seconds remaining, mailbaggers are worried about mounting injuries and inconsistent play (even if Boston has been able to overcome both, so far, while not losing since Nov. 21 in Toronto).

As the Celtics enjoy a much-deserved (and much-needed) day off while trekking to Charlotte for Saturday evening's tilt with the Bobcats, let's tackle all the hodgepodge of lingering questions in Celtic Nation.

Mailbag: Bulls eyed and more

December, 3, 2010

Dennis Wierzbicki/US PresswireThe Bulls will have Carlos Boozer in tow when they visit the Garden Friday.
For the fourth consecutive season, the Celtics are off to a fast start at 14-4 overall. But if you believe what Shaquille O'Neal and Glen Davis have said recently, Boston should be undefeated. Many in the Celtics locker room truly feel like no team has beaten them; Boston simply beat itself in those four defeats.

And while it's way too early to start dreaming about the playoffs, consider this nugget from ESPN researchers: Heading into Thursday's action, the Celtics boasted the second-easiest remaining schedule in the NBA with their opponent's combined winning percentage currently at 47 percent.

The one team in front of them? The Chicago Bulls (46.9 percent), who visit the TD Garden Friday night (ESPN, 8 ET) for another early season showdown of two teams that could find themselves near the top of the Eastern Conference by season's end.

The Bulls rallied to force overtime in their first visit to Boston last month, but Kevin Garnett forced Joakim Noah to commit a turnover late in the extra session allowing the Celtics to escape with a 110-105 triumph.

With the hoopla surrounding the return of both Tom Thibodeau and Brian Scalabrine having played out last visit, the focus Friday will be on two conference powers slugging it out. That's where we start his week's 'bag.

Mailbag: Leftovers on Turkey Day

AP Photo/Winslow TownsonKevin Garnett gets a ferocious chest bump from Nate Robinson.
Our Thanksgiving Day mailbag got a rush of last-minutes questions Wednesday evening as Celtics reserve guard Delonte West crashed to the floor, breaking his wrist, and sidelining him indefinitely.

On the eve of a holiday in which many in the Celtics' locker room expressed thanks for the health of their family and friends, Boston has been dealt a tough blow, losing what many considered the glue of their second unit just one week after West returned to the court following a 10-game suspension to start the season.

His teammates were heartbroken for West, who endured so much this offseason while dealing with the weapons charges that led to his suspension and then working hard to make up for time spent away from the basketball court, only to have this setback.

"He must be so frustrated, I can't imagine," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. "I can't speak to it, actually, it's nothing I've ever gone through. But to sit out that long, like sitting out from an injury, then come back and get injured again, it would be extremely frustrating.

"[West] was great. He had a lot of good things happening for him. He goes through the whole [locker room scuffle] incident with Von [Wafer] and doubted himself. He had become a terrific teammate during that little stretch then, bam, [he's injured]. You gotta keep rolling, though, that's part of it. That's life. It's tough sometimes, but you gotta keep walking forward and that's what we've got to do."

In the grand scheme of things, the Celtics have been through this before. They managed the first 10 games of the 2010-11 season without West, and now the Celtics must find a way to navigate until he's healthy again.

Let's dive into this holiday mailbag and see what's on the mind of our letter-senders:
