The Boston Celtics officially assigned rookie guard Avery Bradley to the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League Friday, one day after coach Doc Rivers suggested the move was imminent.

"We’re going to send Avery down pretty soon," Rivers said at Thursday's practice. "So that he can get some reps; Playing basketball. He needs to play basketball. Especially with our schedule and the fact that we don't practice at all."

The Celtics might not have 12 healthy bodies to fill their active roster, but that didn't detour the team from sending down Bradley. Even in Wednesday's lopsided triumph over the Sacramento Kings, Bradley logged a mere minute of court time, showing the team is content to get by with the guards they have available.

Maine hosts Erie Friday night and Bradley is expected to be in uniform. The Red Claws then embark on a four-game road trip to Texas next week, an appropriate trip for Bradley to make after playing at the University of Texas last season.

Bradley, the 19th overall selection in June's draft, appeared in 14 games, averaging 1.1 points over 4.7 minutes per contest. His four points in limited time against the Kings matched his career high.

Bradley is Boston's first D-League assignment of the 2010-11 season.
