Nick Young upset with Sullinger trash talk

12/8/2014

LOS ANGELES -- Something was wrong with Nick Young.

The Los Angeles Lakers guard was visibly upset after a blowout loss to the Boston Celtics on Friday, more so than at any point this season. It was nothing like the usual upbeat, boisterous personality “Swaggy P” has come to be known for.

After that game, Young was asked what happened.

“I don’t know, man,” he said. “I ain't giving no credit to them. I don’t know, I can’t talk about it.”

And then Young left -- not just the group interview in the Celtics’ visiting locker room, but the locker room itself, turning heads as he departed.

There was more to the story, and Young explained Monday after the Lakers’ 104-87 blowout loss to the New Orleans Pelicans at Staples Center.

“I don’t like when people talk trash and then they get the W after and they feel like they did something,” Young said Sunday. “I don’t like that feeling.”

Who was talking trash?

“Jared Sullinger,” Young said, mentioning the Celtics forward. “Me and him got into it. I just didn't like that.”

Sullinger had 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals in the Celtics’ 113-96 win. Young said the two do not have a history of such incidents.

“Just hitting shots, talking trash, looking at the bench,” Young said. “It made me feel like I was a punk or something. I don’t stand for that.”

Players from the Lakers and Celtics engaging in heated trash-talking is hardly new or surprising, considering their storied rivalry. But Young said he’s fine.

“I’m doing all right, man,” he said. “I was a little messed up the other day. I’ll be all right, man. Once we get a win or two, I’ll be all right."
