As the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks approaches, OTL pauses to remember one of the most inspiring stories of courage from that day, and one that has a local angle (video above).
Former Boston College lacrosse player Welles Crowther -- known by those he saved as the Man in the Red Bandanna -- led people to safety after the south tower of the World Trade Center was struck by a passenger jet. He lost his life that day as he was trying to lead people to safety.
Fans have started a grassroots social media effort to pay tribute to Crowther at Saturday’s BC-Central Florida game in Orlando. Fans for both the Eagles and Knights are encouraging anyone attending the game to wear a red bandana to honor Crowther.
So far, on the Facebook page dedicated to the movement, more than 1,200 people have indicated they’ll be wearing a red bandana to the game.
