University of Massachusetts sophomore point guard Chaz Williams was named to the All-Atlantic 10 first team as voted on by the league coaches and announced by the league office on Monday.
Williams leads UMass in scoring (16.2 ppg), assists (6.4 apg), steals (2.3), 3-point FG pct (.403), FT pct. (.780) and minutes (33.8 mpg). He also ranks among the A-10 leaders in scoring (seventh), assists (first), steals (third) and assist-to-turnover ratio (fifth, 1.8).
In his first season at UMass, the Hofstra transfer has led the Minutemen to a 20-10 record, the first 20-win season under fourth-year coach Derek Kellogg.
UMass opens A-10 tournament play Tuesday night against Duquesne at the Mullins Center. At 9-7, UMass finished in a four-way tie for fifth place in the league standings but is the No. 8 seed by virtue of tiebreakers.
Duquesne (16-14, 7-9), the No. 9 seed, beat the Minutemen 80-69 in the their only meeting this season. But that game was in Pittsburgh, and UMass is 14-1 at home this season.
The winner of Tuesday night's game will play top seed Temple on Friday at noon in the tournament quarterfinals at Atlantic City.
