One made the flashy play, picking off a pass and streaking to the end zone for six points. The other made the steady play, walling off pass-rushers, blocking would-be tacklers and opening holes for the running backs to get to the second level.
For making those varying contributions, Boston College linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis was named ACC Linebacker of the Week and BC right tackle Ian White was named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Pierre-Louis, a senior from Norwalk, Conn., made eight solo tackles (a game high) and had a pick-six of Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas in the fourth quarter to give BC its first lead (27-20) since the second quarter. The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder is second in the ACC with 9.13 tackles per game, third in solo tackles with 44 and fourth in total tackles with 73.
The interception was the first of Pierre-Louis’ career.
“KPL played a phenomenal game,” BC coach Steve Addazio said Monday. “I thought he was dynamic on special teams and on defense.”
And while his 33-yard interception return for a touchdown made the highlight reel, Addazio was just as impressed by a play Pierre-Louis made on special teams. After the BC offense was forced to punt, Pierre-Louis streaked downfield uncovered and brought down the return man single-handedly.
“He was just like, ‘I’m gonna make sure that this guy doesn’t get one inch on this play,’ ” Addazio said. “It was really something to watch. And that’s a guy starting on defense and playing a lot of snaps. But that’s a guy that clearly made his mind up that, ‘I’m gonna take this in my hands and make sure that this doesn’t happen.’”
White, a fifth-year senior from Conway, N.H., was part of an offensive line that held the Hokies without a sack and paved the way for Andre Williams and the BC backs to rush 42 times for 196 yards. The BC run game had a net loss of only five yards against Virginia Tech’s vaunted run defense.
A 6-foot-5, 302-pound right tackle, White was voted a team captain during preseason.
