EX-Marshall QB tops UMass haul

By Jack McCluskey

Less than a month after being introduced for his second stint as UMass football coach, Mark Whipple announced the first recruiting class of this latest go-round.

The coach used his Twitter account (@CoachWhipUMass) to give frequent updates and nuggets of information throughout Wednesday’s national signing day festivities.

When all was said and done, the Minutemen added 19 players -- 17 freshmen and two graduate transfers -- to five spring enrollees. That brings the count to 24 new players on the UMass roster for 2014.

Headlining the class is Marshall transfer Blake Frohnapfel, who has two years of eligibility left and will compete for the starting job under center with freshmen Ross Comis (Weirton, W.Va./Madonna High School), Randall West (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrenceville High School) and Andrew Verboys (Armonk, N.Y./Fork Union Academy) and holdover A.J. Doyle.

Whipple had this to say about Frohnapfel:

Big things ahead for QB Blake Frohnapfel who will transfer to UMass from Marshall #FireTheMusket

Also transferring in is former Penn State wideout Alex Kenney and former BC and Dean College offensive lineman Liam Porter.

Of Porter, Whipple said:

Some more beef up front with Liam Porter part of the @UMassFootball family. He’ll be excited for our season opener! #FireTheMusket

The class is heavy on big men, with five recruits on each the offensive and defensive lines, and quarterbacks, with four signal-callers included in the haul.

The Minutemen finished 1-11 in each of their first two seasons at the FBS level, resulting in the firing of former coach Charley Molnar and the reunion with Whipple. There are 205 days until the 2014 season kicks off, against Boston College at Gillette Stadium.

With the Class of 2014 officially signed up, the work has begun:
