BOSTON -- On Tuesday evening, an audience gathered at the Loews Boston Common watched the world premiere of Jonathan Hock's "Unguarded," a chronicle of former Durfee basketball star Chris Herren's battle and triumph over substance abuse.
The documentary, which will air Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ESPN, is the latest from the acclaimed director and follows Herren's ascent from Fall River to the NBA and his spiralling descent fueled by his drug addiction.
As gruesome as the details of Herren's trouble with addiction are, "Unguarded" is ultimately about hope as Hock's cameras crisscross country with Herren as he speaks to groups (ranging from recovering addicts, to prisoners, to school children) with his cautionary message.
After the viewing, ESPN Boston's Scott Barboza caught up with Herren to talk about the project and his newest endeavor, The Herren Project.
