For the first time in nearly two years, we have a new No. 1 in the latest update of our statewide MIAA football poll.

Long-standing No. 1 Everett saw its 28-game win streak snapped on Friday night, with a 13-7 loss in double-overtime to Barnstable, previously ranked No. 3 in the polls. It marked the Tide's first loss at home since dropping a 19-13 decision to Xaverian on October 17, 2009.

After 22 consecutive weeks as the No. 1 team in Massachusetts, Everett falls to No. 2, while Barnstable becomes the No. 1 team in the land. Everett had previously held the No. 1 spot since Week 6 of the 2010 season.

A few notes and observations about this week's poll:

Making history: Barnstable's rise to the top of the poll marks uncharted territory within its own program, within the Cape & Islands region, and on a state-wide level. Barnstable represents the Old Colony League, and it's the first time a team outside of the Catholic Conference, Big Three Conference or Greater Boston League has held the top spot in the land. Duxbury went wire-to-wire last season as the No. 2 team in the state, representing the Patriot League, while Barnstable's OCL archrival Bridgewater-Raynham reached to as high as No. 3 last season before losing to Barnstable in overtime for the OCL title.

Catholic Conference stumbles: Xaverian (previously No. 11) and BC High (22) fall all the way out of the poll, into the "Last 10 out", following respective losses to Andover (15-13) and Jersey City, N.J. power St. Peter's Prep (56-0). One can argue few teams in the state would survive the brutal September schedule each one endured, it's the way in which they lost that is concerning. BC High and Xaverian were preseason Nos. 2 and 3 in our poll, respectively. St. John's Prep takes a small dip, to No. 3 from No. 2, on account of its loss to Everett two weeks ago.

Plenty of new faces: Springfield Putnam makes its return to the polls at No. 20 this week, following a 30-20 win over Westfield on Friday night. Putnam was our preseason No. 23, but quickly fell out after a 21-6 loss to neighboring rival Springfield Central in Week 1. Nauset (21) and Stoughton (24) make historic debuts in the poll for the first time ever, while Somerset-Berkley (25) is back in the poll for the first time since its run to the 2010 Division 3 Super Bowl.

Ups and Downs: Taking the biggest tumble this week is North Attleborough, which dropped 12 spots to No. 22 following a 21-0 shutout at the hands of unranked Foxborough. The biggest jump this week belongs to Andover, which moved up eight spots to No. 17 following its upset of Xaverian.
