Sharon makes debut in Top 25 football poll

We updated our statewide MIAA Top 25 poll this morning after a wild weekend of games, and there is plenty of movement this week.

A few notes and observations:

Fresh faces, welcome returns: With St. John's (Shrewsbury), Needham, Springfield Putnam and Weymouth all taking losses over the weekend, we've got plenty of new blood at the back end of the poll. Burlington debuts at No. 21 following an impressive shutout of Wakefield, while Central Catholic makes its season debut at No. 23 with its hard-fought win over Chelmsford. The biggest surprise might come at No. 25, where Sharon -- that's right, Sharon -- jumps into the poll for the first time in our three-year history. The Eagles shocked the Hockomock League on Saturday with a 16-14 overtime win over Stoughton, which stays put at No. 18 following the loss.

Making a welcome return to the poll this week is Mansfield, which sits at No. 19 after a thorough 46-33 win over King Philip. The Warriors drop 11 spots to No. 22 following the loss, which gives us four Hockomock teams in the Top 25 poll for the first time all season.

Shuffle near the top: With Duxbury having to scratch out another late win over a perceived weaker opponent in the Patriot League, the Dragons fall two spots this week to No. 6. Moving up are Reading (4) and Walpole (5).

CMass, WMass losing ground: We started the year with five squads from the Central Mass. region, and three from the Western region, in our preseason poll. That number has since dwindled. Putnam and St. John's both dropped following their losses, giving us just three Central Mass. teams and two Western Mass. teams in the poll.

Here is how the poll breaks down this week by league affiliation:
