Former Springfield Putnam wide receiver/safety Kelly Dobbins has verbally committed to the University of Rhode Island for 2013, Putnam head coach William Watson told ESPNBoston.com this morning.
Dobbins did a post-graduate year this fall at Bridgton Academy, in Bridgton, Maine. He also had offers froom Villanova, New Hampshire and Albany.
The 6-foot-1 Dobbins tore his meniscus in the 2010 Western Mass. Division 2 Super Bowl, only to find out months later it was actually an ACL tear after getting a second opinion from a doctor. Dobbins played much of his senior season of 2011 with the injury, as the Beavers won the Western Mass. D2 Super Bowl over intra-city rival Commerce. He had surgery following the game, and suited up for the Shriners All-Star Classic the following June.
Dobbins is headed to the North Kingstown, R.I. campus as a safety, according to Watson.
