A few notes and observations about this week's poll:

Upsets lead to a shake-up: A trio of previously Top 10 teams took stumbles this week following surprise losses. St. John's Prep dropped two spots to No. 7 following its 68-55 loss to No. 23 Waltham on Sunday afternoon, the Eagles' first loss of the season. Taunton fell five spots to No. 15 after coming up on the short end of an otherwise thrilling finish against New Bedford, a 77-76 last-second Whalers victory.

The biggest drop, however, goes to Wachusett, dropping 12 spots to No. 18. The Mountaineers sandwiched an otherwise very impressive win over Brockton with two surprise losses -- they started the week with a 61-43 drubbing at the hands of Worcester South, and finished as victims of one of the more stunning upsets of January, a loss to unranked Nashoba.

Scarlet Hawks fresh on the scene: Milford makes its debut at No. 25 this week, its first-ever appearance in the three-year history of our poll. The Scarlet Hawks are off to a 12-1 start, and have taken a commanding three-game lead in the Hockomock League's Davenport division at 9-1. This is Milford's first year in the league; they previously competed in the Mid-Wach League's "A" division in the Central Mass. district.

Notable returns: Four teams are making returns to the poll after varying amounts of time outside the Top 25. New Bedford (21) returns for the first time since taking a 93-39 thrashing at the hands of Lowell late last month, while Worcester South (22) and Waltham (23) are making their first appearances since the beginning of the season. Rockland dropped from No. 18 all the way out of the poll last week following a surprise loss to Monomoy, but returns this week at No. 24.

Here's how the poll breaks down this week by league affiliation:

Merrimack Valley - 4
Boston City League - 3
