Franklin baseball coach Dave Niro steps down

Franklin High School announced today that Dave Niro is retiring as head coach of the Panthers' baseball team.

Niro found continued success over his career, which included time at Shrewsbury High before coming to Franklin. In nine years at the helm of Franklin, he compiled a 125-65 record with four Hockomock League titles and eight MIAA Tournament appearances.

He'll be most known for the 2011 season, when the Panthers backpedaled their way into the D1 South tournament at 12-8 with the No. 9 seed, only to capture the sectional title in dramatic fashion. The Panthers torched BC High in the semifinals, 17-6, then beat Xaverian in thrilling fashion, 6-5, via a walkoff home run for the South title.

"Dave has been outstanding to work with," Franklin Athletic Director Brad Sidwell said in a statement. "His loyalty and support of the entire athletic program is appreciated. The administration, coaches, and student athletes of Franklin will miss him."
