Player Diary correspondent Matt Costello of Everett checks in with his newest installment. The Crimson Tide travel to Russell Field to take on Cambridge this morning.
After months of hard work, my senior season is coming to a close. It’s hard to believe but yet it’s a part of life. My team and I are potentially two weeks away from achieving our goal. It’s been a great year for Everett Football. We are really looking forward to starting our playoff run since sealing the Greater Boston League after our win against Malden last week.
The game against Malden had a lot of hype going in, but turned out to be over by half-time. The team had practiced really well, and we were very confident going into the game. Malden versus Everett is a great rivalry, and both cities get really excited for the game. It was a very special day for the seniors, because it was the last game that we will ever play at Everett Memorial Stadium. I’m glad we were able to win and come out of the last home game with a victory.
Our Thanksgiving Day game is against Cambridge. We look to get another win and stay healthy for the playoffs. Hopefully the starters can execute the game plan and allow for some of the JV kids to get some playing time. Thanksgiving is always special. As coach Dib always says it’s a great day because you get to play football with your brothers and then go home to a thanksgiving dinner.
It will be interesting to see how other teams do on Thanksgiving. The Xaverian/St John’s Prep game has huge playoff implications as does the Andover/Central Catholic game. Most importantly though, we have to stay focused and win our game.
Aside from football, the annual turkey toss is this Wednesday. It’s fun to get up early in the morning and watch some kids throw a frozen turkey around. Plus, we have to keep the streak of turkey toss champs alive!
It should be a great two weeks coming up. I really want to end the season right for my teammates, my coaches, my city and myself. I hope my team can leave its mark in the history of Everett High football. It is an exciting and emotional part of my life that I always want to look back on and smile. It’s going to be awesome.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, and have a safe holiday.
