Historic final regular season boys hoop poll

We updated our statewide MIAA Top 25 boys basketball poll for the final time of the regular season this weekend. To view it, CLICK HERE.

Per ESPNBoston.com's long-standing policy, polls are not updated while a state tournament is in progress. The boys basketball poll will be next be updated on March 18, following the conclusion of the MIAA State Championship Tournament. It will be the final update of the 2013-14 season.

For the first time in the four-year history of our high school section, a preseason No. 1 in boys basketball has held on to the top spot throughout the regular season. Defending Division 1 state champ Putnam was the top team in the land in our preseason poll, and never looked back, going 21-0 to earn the top overall seed in Division 1 West.

The Beavers' resume includes wins over No. 2 New Mission, No. 9 Cambridge, No. 10 St. Peter-Marian and No. 24 Northampton. Three other Putnam opponents -- Holyoke, Springfield Cathedral and Springfield Central -- have also spent varying amounts of time in the poll this season.

This also marks the first time both ESPNBoston.com's boys and girls preseason No. 1 basketball teams went straight through the regular season as the top dogs. Girls preseason No. 1 Braintree remains on top in the final girls regular season poll, its lone blemish a loss to nationally-renowned power Christ The King (N.Y.) at last month's Hoophall Classic.

The last basketball team to go wire to wire as our No. 1 team in the state was Andover in 2011-12, when they captured their third straight Division 1 state championship behind two-time Miss Basketball winner Nicole Boudreau.
