Boys Hoop Bracket Breakdown: South

2/24/2014

Division 1

Favorites: Catholic Memorial (19-1), Mansfield (20-2), North Quincy (19-1), Newton North (17-3)

Contenders: BC High (13-7), Needham (17-3), Taunton (16-4), Wellesley (15-5), Quincy (14-6)

Sleepers: Brookline (13-8), Braintree (12-8), Durfee (12-8), Marshfield (11-9)

Overview: May the odds be ever in your favor, Catholic Memorial. Two years ago, the hot-handed Knights had the unfortunate draw of state runner-up Brockton in the quarterfinals. This year, they once again fall into the “group of death” quadrant of the South field, potentially facing either Wellesley or BC High in a quarterfinal. For all the talk of its plethoric scoring behind stars Aahmane Santos and Giulien Smith, they seem to have bad luck when it comes to playoff seedings. Top seed North Quincy might have the most desirable path to UMass-Boston, grouped with Quincy, Barnstable, Newton South and Marshfield – though the latter could sneak up on the Raiders. Tough potential quarterfinal draws elsewhere include Newton North versus Needham, and Mansfield against either Brookline or Taunton – though the Hornets must first potentially get past Attleboro, which upset them earlier this season.

Hall’s Upset Special: Brookline over Taunton

Hall’s Breakout Tournament Star: Ryan Boulter, Jr. G, Mansfield

Hall's Pick: Catholic Memorial over North Quincy

Bradley's upset special: Bridgewater-Raynham over Durfee

Bradley's breakout star: Brandon Twitty, Soph., Catholic Memorial

Bradley's Pick: Catholic Memorial

Division 2

Favorites: Bishop Feehan (19-1), Dorchester (15-4)

Contenders: Walpole (13-8), Whitman-Hanson (17-3), Westwood (16-4), Scituate (15-5), Milton (12-8), Randolph (13-6)

Sleepers: Dartmouth (14-6), Canton (13-7), Sandwich (13-7), Silver Lake (13-9)

Overview: Top seed Bishop Feehan has the best playoff resume, most depth, and the best shooter in the field in sophomore Mike Nelson (16 points per game). But similar to last season, this looks like a pretty wide-open field (Then again, we said that last year, and top seed Scituate took the field anyways). An interesting one to keep an eye on is Walpole, whose eight losses deceive what was a tough non-conference schedule. David St. Martin has slowly built a feisty contender, and he’ll lean on Ryan Fogarty, Adam Quinlan and Scott Arsenault to carry the scoring.

Hall’s Upset Special: Walpole over Dartmouth

Hall’s Breakout Tournament Star: Mike Nelson, Soph. G, Bishop Feehan

Hall's Pick: Bishop Feehan over Walpole

Bradley's Upset Special: Walpole over Dartmouth

Bradley's Breakout Star: Mike Nelson, Soph., Bishop Feehan

Pick a Winner: Bishop Feehan

Division 3

Favorites: Old Rochester (16-4), Cardinal Spellman (16-4), Martha’s Vineyard (16-4)

Contenders: Westport (14-4), Rockland (15-5), Wareham (15-5)

Sleepers: Burke (10-8), Case (14-6), Greater New Bedford (12-8)

Overview: Cardinal Spellman was our pick to win D3 from the get-go, and there hasn’t been much to sway us in another direction –- though this is far from an easy field to navigate. The most athletic team in this field -– Martha’s Vineyard –- is on the Cardinals’ side of the bracket, as is Wareham, which has quietly put together yet another 15-win season with its patented run-and-gun style. Also keep an eye on Westport, which is riding momentum into the playoffs after a win over Brockton late in the regular season.

Hall’s Upset Special: Burke over Greater New Bedford

Hall’s Breakout Tournament Star: Joey Crane, Sr. F, Cardinal Spellman

Hall's Pick: Cardinal Spellman over Westport

Division 4

Favorites: Bishop Connolly (17-0), Cohasset (19-1)

Contenders: Pope John Paul II (14-4), South Shore Voke (16-2), West Bridgewater (14-6)

Sleepers: South Shore Christian (16-4), Bristol-Plymouth (15-5), Old Colony (13-7), Nantucket (12-7)

Overview: As the defending D4 state champ and a solid scheduling resume, which includes a win over Westport, Bishop Connolly deserves some clout here. But Cohasset might be the deepest squad in this field. It took a last-second shot from Rockland to snap the Skippers’ 19-game win streak; and with an athletic lineup facilitated by Rocco Laugelle and including Chris Haggerty, Henry Brown and Joe Buckley, this might be the deepest team in the field.

Hall’s Upset Special: Nantucket over Old Colony

Hall’s Breakout Tournament Star: Rocco Laugelle, Cohasset

Hall's Pick: Cohasset over Bishop Connolly

Bradley's Upset Special: Norton over Westport

Bradley's Breakout Star: Ryan Roach, Sr., Cardinal Spellman

Pick a Winner: Cardinal Spellman

Bradley's Upset Special: Cape Cod Academy over West Bridgewater

Bradley's Breakout Star: Rocco Laguelle, Sr., Cohasset

Pick a Winner: Bishop Connolly
