Boys Hoop Bracket Breakdown: North

2/24/2014

Division 1

FAVORITES: St. John's Prep (16-4), Andover (16-4), Central Catholic (17-5)

CONTENDERS: Everett (16-4), Cambridge (15-5), Lynn English (14-6)

SLEEPERS: East Boston (13-7), Chelmsford (13-7), Lexington (12-10), Charlestown (10-10), Malden (10-10)

OVERVIEW: St. John's Prep and Andover made an emergence in the past couple weeks, especially at the IAABO Board 130 Classic. The Golden Warriors got the best of Everett in the opening round behind 34 points from junior guard David Giribaldi, while Prep got past Lynn English. When the two met in the final, Max Butterbrodt, Ben Judson, and point guard Kareem Davis carried the offensive load for Prep in a championship-winning performance. Central Catholic, meanwhile, went on to win the President's Day Round Ball Classic at Central, knocking off BC High and Cambridge in order to do so.

Bradley's Upset Special: None

Bradley's Breakout Tournament Star: Johnny Hilaire, Jr., Lynn English

Bradley's Pick: St. John's Prep

Division 2

FAVORITES: New Mission (18-2)

CONTENDERS: Danvers (17-3), Salem (16-4), Lynn Classical (13-4), Belmont (16-6)

SLEEPERS: Beverly (15-7), Burlington (11-9), Tewksbury (13-7), Woburn (15-5)

OVERVIEW: The No. 2 ranked team in the state in the latest boys hoops top 25, New Mission has emerged has the favorite in Division 2 North after a regular season where they dominated Boston City League play, as well as picking up key victories over out of league foes like Bishop Guertin (N.H.), Walpole, and Central Catholic. The Boston City champions will have some tough competition though, led by a John Walsh-coached Danvers squad, a pair of two of the most athletic teams in the field in Lynn Classical and Woburn, and a Belmont team who finished with the best league record in the Middlesex League.

Bradley's Upset Special: No. 10 North Andover over No. 7 Beverly

Breakout Tournament Star: Wabissa Bede, Soph., North Andover

Bradley's Pick: New Mission

Hall's Upset Special: Melrose over Woburn

Hall's Breakout Tournament Star: Asante Sandiford, New Mission

Hall's Pick: New Mission over Salem

Division 3

FAVORITES: Greater Lawrence Tech (17-3), Watertown (15-5)

CONTENDERS: Minuteman (15-7), Arlington Catholic (12-8)

SLEEPERS: Lynnfield (11-9), Pentucket (10-10), Stoneham (10-10)

OVERVIEW: With two time Division 3 state champion Danvers moving up to Division 2, this year's D3 North race will certainly be much less predictable with the Falcons out of the picture. Greater Lawrence Tech, who two of their three losses come to Greater Lowell, holds the tournament's top seed. Second-seeded Watertown figures to be the benefit of a bit of a tougher schedule though, after a couple of tough early season losses to Belmont and St. Clement the Raiders went on to finish in first place in the Middlesex League (Freedom).

Bradley's Upset Special: Saugus over Northeast Regional

Breakout Tournament Star: Brendan Hoban, Soph., Watertown

Bradley's Pick: Watertown

Hall's Upset Special: Bedford over Pentucket

Hall's Breakout Tournament Star: T.J. Hairston, Jr. F, Watertown

CONTENDERS: Georgetown (15-5), Manchester-Essex (14-5)

SLEEPERS: Bishop Fenwick (10-10), Lowell Catholic (13-7)

OVERVIEW: Winners of 19 consecutive games, top-seeded St. Clement couldn't be flying much higher heading into the tournament – the only loss the Catholic Central (Small) champs picked up during the regular season was in their very first game, against D1 North sleeper East Boston. Keep an eye on Hamilton-Wenham as well, the Generals rolled through Cape Ann League play this regular season. A name to remember is Hamilton-Wenham freshman Marcus Zegarowski, younger brother of Philadelphia 76ers point guard Michael Carter-Williams and one of the most talented freshmen in the state.

Bradley's breakout Tournament Star: Marcus Zegarowski, Fr., Hamilton-Wenham

Bradley's Pick: St. Clement

Hall's Upset Special: Snowden over Manchester-Essex
