Mansfield's Hershman to walk-on at UNH

3/31/2014

Mansfield senior wide receiver Michael Hershman has verbally committed to the University of New Hampshire, as a preferred walk-on, he tweeted tonight.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Hershman was a key cog in the Hornets' run to the inaugural MIAA Division 2 State Championship, battling through a nagging sports hernia to rank second on the team in receptions (43), yards (723) and touchdown catches (6). Perhaps most impressively, Hershman switched to wingback after the Hornets ditched the spread offense following star tight end Brendan Hill's season-ending knee injury on Thanksgiving; in the state title game against St. John's of Shrewsbury, Hershman carried eight times for 68 yards and a touchdown, as the Hornets prevailed 28-14.

Hershman joins a quality class of Bay State talents headed to Durham, N.H. for Wildcats coach Sean McGonigle's 2014 recruiting class: Leominster safety Neil O'Connor, the state's Gatorade Player of the Year; Cardinal Spellman wide receiver Rory Donovan; Central Catholic safety D'Andre Drummond-Mayrie; and Amherst athlete Kieran Presley, who did a post-graduate season last fall at Loomis Chafee (Conn.).
